Don’t wait to make a difference
Face it, most of us are not great models when it comes to teaching patience.
The truth is, we have little to none of it when driving, putting up with inane webinars or lame meetings with reps.
We also expect our field techs to have magical powers, to be able to pull burning planes out of craters while keeping upside-down trains running backwards, on the rails and on time.

Nope… we are not the industry to look at when it comes to passive tranquility while driving around Sydney… anywhere around Sydney.
Given this level of ‘feistiness’, it’s interesting that we are so inactive when it comes to moving our organisation, or department forward, strategically.
We will sit through insightful business presentations from Leslie Shiner and Steve Firszt at CEDIA Expos, or the CEDIA Business Exchange, and glean awareness of the way things could be, if these lessons were implemented.
But the real world gets in the way and those lessons get lost in translation.
We get fired up, and ‘see the light’. We successfully get ourselves on the plane home but then quickly become engrossed in work around home and/or start putting out fires at the shop.
So, how about sitting through a short 15-minute management conference right now?
Pour yourself an organic lemonade, sweet tea or bourbon, take a load off and invest 15 in yourself.
Here are a few things to ponder if you are having a fit of mind block:
- What area of life is in the most chaos, and what can you do immediately to make positive headway?
- What items on the to-do list can you delegate to someone else right now?
- What items on the list will you never realistically get done, and who can you out-source them to?
- What is your genuine ‘true north’? Are you willful, intentional and disciplined to keep on track? What activities are you going to expend energy and resources on today that will conflict with that?
- What time wasters and resource pot-holes are you avoiding?
Don’t wait to make a difference.
Resist all the internal alarms about how messy making changes might be. Resist that inner voice.
Look, many people who want to lose weight do so with some kind of personal trainer, or program. Those who wish to invest correctly seek a professional broker and learn the skills from those who learned the hard way…
Even Michael Jordon, the greatest basketball player of all time, leaned on coaches to teach him basketball. He did this his entire career.
Well, if he trusted his advisors, so can you.
Many of us already do this in the technical arena quite frequently. We crowd into seminars and technical trainings to keep abreast of the next generation of hardware advances.
But, here is the thing: Postponing action will not improve lifestyles. Working more hours will not restore any of the above scenarios.
So stop procrastinating; take control of your mind and assassinate that troll occupying space in your skull. Get some help. Find a trusted advisor – talk to you father, brother, priest, therapist, favourite rep or one of the Weld guys.
And think about joining one of CEDIA’s groups, or attending a Connected Shindig, and use the relationships you foster in these environments as peer accountability. The point is to move the needle for you, your department or company right now. Fuel that inner impatience.
We promise… you will see rapid results!
